Makeup for a photo shoot… is it essential?
Makeup is a bit like salt in cooking; you could do without it, but the result would be pretty bland! When preparing for a portrait shoot, it’s a step you definitely shouldn’t overlook. For a portfolio or a “beauty” session, it’s even essential. Yes, today, with the miracles of digital photography, everything can be retouched in post-processing, almost like magic. But for a specific, creative look, nothing beats a good brushstroke before stepping in front of the camera. Post-processing should be a subtle and natural enhancement of the image, not a deep alteration.
And then, you might think: “I could do my own makeup, after all, I do it every day.” Unless you’re a makeup pro, this often seems like a good idea… on paper. In the studio, the lighting is very different from your bathroom or office. This intense, almost omnipresent light could turn your DIY makeup into a slight powdery haze that vanishes under the flash’s glow. Especially around the eyes. Your usual makeup might go unnoticed unless it’s really boosted.

The products you use daily are perfect for a day at the office or an evening with friends, but for a photo shoot… Professionals have products in their kits that are specifically designed to withstand artificial lighting and the passage of time. The result? You stay flawless from the first click to the last. Even if you opt for a “natural” look, professional makeup is your best ally. Without it, the flash light will be unforgiving: it will highlight oily skin and emphasize shiny areas like the forehead, nose, or cheekbones. A simple mattifying primer applied before the session can save the day.
As you’ve probably guessed, at Photographe Genève, we highly recommend opting for the makeup option. For us, it’s the key to a successful photo shoot. And be careful, we’re not talking about a quick “beauty touch-up” thrown into a package. No, with us, it’s a real professional makeup session, lasting from 45 to 60 minutes depending on your wishes, led by a makeup artist who will perfectly adapt the makeup to your expectations. The goal is for you to look your best from start to finish, making your shoot unforgettable!

But if, despite everything, you decide to take matters (or rather the brush) into your own hands, it is absolutely possible; just focus on controlling the shine. Whether woman or man, the challenge is the same: mattify that skin! Because, no matter how well-intentioned you are, shine is the sworn enemy of post-processing and can seriously ruin a photo shoot. Don’t worry, though, we always conduct tests at the beginning of the session to prevent this.
And for those sneaky little blemishes that appear the night before the shoot (yes, those), don’t stress too much. They are much easier to fix on screen than with a thick layer of foundation “spread on like butter.” So, don’t touch them, we’ll erase them afterward. Ah, if only life were as simple as a Photoshop touch-up!
